DETERMINE THE SOURCE FOR KEEPING YOUR JOURNAL ENTRIES
Before you begin journaling to plan for your business or nonprofit organization, you will need to determine the source for keeping your journal entries. There are many physical, digital, and printable journals available for users today. No matter the format, you should purchase journals that inspire you to write and share your thoughts. If bright colors and fancy designs, or a luxurious type of journal inspires you to write then by all means make that purchase. And, if a digital or printable journal would be more inspirational to you, then invest in some of those. When journaling, make sure to also have writing tools on hand that you are comfortable using. The use of various pens, pencils, or even markers can also inspire you to write.
Establish the habit of keeping your journal visible and accessible. It will help you to be more consistent and accountable in achieving your goals. In the midst of juggling everyday activities, a new idea may escape your mind just as quickly as it comes. Keeping a journal accessible will give you the ability to capture those ideas at the moment. As you review and reflect on your ideas, inspiration will emerge and empower you to create innovative solutions.
SCHEDULE TIME AND CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT FOR JOURNALING
Like most things in life, we tend to be more likely to complete necessary tasks when they are scheduled as daily routines. The biggest challenge for most people to remain consistent in keeping a journal is finding the time to write on a regular basis. Schedule the time to do your journaling when you are most motivated and less distracted as you write. You should also consider setting an alarm on your phone as a reminder.
Create an environment that makes you feel comfortable when you are journaling. In order to remain consistent in anything, I’ve found that it helps to be surrounded by things that bring comfort. What things make you feel most comfortable when you’re writing? Make sure to include those things in your space when you journal (i.e. soft music playing, drinking your favorite beverage, allowing the sun to shine through the window, etc.).
USE YOUR IMAGINATION TO VISUALIZE YOUR SUCCESS
Can you picture yourself having the business of your dreams? In order to gain the confidence to achieve your business goals, you must first have an idea of what it looks like. Visualization techniques will help you to accomplish that. The mental images of visualization exercises can serve as a reminder of what you are trying to achieve and inspire you to attain it.
Take five minutes each morning when you wake up and before you go to bed at night to visualize yourself succeeding at your business goals and living the life of your dreams. Eliminate noises and outside distractions to help you concentrate. Use all five senses in your visualization, including sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. These details will help make your brain think the scenario is real.
Afterwards, spend time writing in your journal. Visualize your future self and use your journal to write a description. Write a lot of details that provide answers to questions about how you envision your dream life. Describe how it feels to have achieved most of your biggest goals, etc.
PRACTICE EFFECTIVE JOURNALING METHODS AND TECHNIQUES
Business journaling can help you explore your ideas and create innovative solutions. In the midst of juggling everyday activities, a new idea may escape your mind just as quickly as it comes. Keeping a journal accessible will give you the ability to capture those ideas at the moment. As you review and reflect on your ideas, inspiration will emerge and empower you to create innovative solutions. Consider using the following methods and techniques when journaling.
The Freewriting Method
Freewriting involves freely journaling any thoughts that come to mind in the moment, unedited and unscripted. You should just let the words flow and write without stopping for a set amount of time (usually 10-15 minutes). It is an excellent method to use for getting yourself stirred to write and overcome writer’s block. It can also be referred to as a pre-writing session before you actually begin your business journaling.
Journal Writing Templates and Writing Prompts
Use journal templates and writing prompts to help you explore your dreams. I’ve found that when I used a journal template along with journal prompts to plan my business goals, it helped me to better process my thoughts. Effective journal prompts can pose questions that inspire and motivate you in the process of realizing your dreams. It will cause you to conduct self-reflection and explore answers that help you to gain the insight that you need.
Journaling will help you to discover the “whys” and the “hows” of planning your dreams. Journaling (especially when using journal prompts) forces you to think through your planning process on a deeper level. It will require you to provide answers to the difficult questions of “why?” and “how?” Discovering the answers to those questions will help you plan your dreams and gain the confidence that you may be lacking towards achieving your goals.
Using a journal (especially when using journal prompts) to plan your dreams will also help you in discovering your intentions. What are the motives surrounding those dreams that you currently have? And, what are you willing to sacrifice to attain those dreams? As you learn more about your intentions another level of accountability is also developed.
Self-Reflection and Brainstorming Techniques
Use research methods and make lists in your journal that allow you to brainstorm ideas that cause increased self-discovery. Take the time to locate and define your interests, values, likes and dislikes, hobbies, skills, strengths, weaknesses, etc. As you use different tools to discover who you really are along with your capabilities, it will better prepare you to discover and plan your dreams.
COMBINE BUSINESS JOURNALING + PLANNING TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS
Using a journal to plan the life and career of your dreams will help you to organize your ideas, identify your business goals, and plan your achievements. Obstacles and distractions are often inevitable. And as a result, we may make decisions or take steps that lead to paths that we did not anticipate. The good news is that journaling combined with effective planning strategies can help you manage your focus. As you use journaling to organize and implement your plans, making it a consistent priority, you’ll gain the ability to avoid making unhealthy decisions and remain on track to achieve your goals. Use the following planning strategies to help you organize your ideas, identify your business goals, and ultimately plan the success of your business.
Write SMART Business Goals
I’ve found journaling to be a unique way to discover, outline, and plan my business goals. Planning for the life and career of your dreams will require that you establish specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely (SMART) goals. Journaling can help you to process your thoughts in order to outline your goals. When you have a goal in mind it is just an idea at that point. Therefore, use journaling to help you identify and develop your goals. Establish a time frame to achieve your goals with specific, realistic dates. Determine if your goals are short-term or long-term. Then, set deadline dates for each goal which will enable you to track your outcomes and hold yourself accountable.
Create Actionable Steps With Deadlines
Your action steps should target your plans for achieving your defined business goals. After you have outlined the plan for your SMART business goals through journaling, create a list of action steps with deadlines. Your deadlines should consist of a set timeframe with realistic dates. Make your deadlines a priority by using a calendar to track your time and set reminders and alerts to help you successfully meet your deadlines.
Use a Planner to Schedule Your Weekly Tasks
Pre-plan your week. To avoid the stress that comes with not being prepared, you should consider developing a routine and schedule time each week to pre-plan for your next week. Schedule reoccurring tasks that align with your action steps as a general “to do” list.
Hold Yourself Accountable and Work With an Accountability Partner
You should review your performance on a continual basis in order to hold yourself accountable. Also, seek feedback from an established accountability partner. Reflect over your past performance, do a self-assessment of your outcomes, and gather feedback.
Create a Reward System for Yourself
When developing the plan for your goals and action steps, it is important that you create a reward system. Your reward system should motivate you to stay on target. Brainstorm a list of 5-10 potential rewards that you can use when you’ve achieved your goals.
IMPLEMENT BUSINESS JOURNALING + PLANNING AS A DAILY PRACTICE
As you practice journaling to organize your plans, you’ll ultimately remain on track for business success. Make journaling a part of your daily practice. Schedule a specific time during the day for self-reflection and journaling to take place on a daily basis. You should consider setting an alarm on your phone as a reminder. Also, consider scheduling your journaling after you complete another task that you enjoy so that it serves as a reminder.
Keep a journal readily available as a reminder to write in it. Whether you are using a journaling template or any other type of journal, you should keep it accessible so that you are reminded to write in it. You should keep your journal with your personal belongings that you carry with you throughout the day i.e. purse, backpack, etc. Also, if you plan to journal during the evening or at night, it would help to keep your journal by your bedside. Implement the following practices with your business journaling.
Schedule Check-in Meetings With Yourself
Schedule check-in meetings with yourself on a regular basis to track your outcomes and make any adjustments to your plans as needed.
